Porcelain, Glass Clay and Others

Glass clay is available, but is even newer than the non-precious clays, so it's still in the development stage. It also requires specialist firing techniques. As with the non-precious clays there are still pieces that fail at the firing stage.

I regularly use Porcelain as a medium to create sculptures and other ceramic items. I've also used it as a base to apply silver clay and paste to, essentially creating a silver plating on an item that would unfeasibly large if made just from silver clays. Porcelain can also be used as an insert or cabochon to interesting effect.

Faux Bone is a plastic material that carves easily and can be heated and moulded into any shape. It has many interesting uses, such as forming the main part of a bracelet or ring, or as an insert for mettle clays. It's extremely strong, and I've produced a few pieces of jewellery with this material, and have been on a workshop with Robert Dancik, who discovered uses for this material in mixed media projects.
